café cree doesn’t do fast food
and that has been a recipe for success for owners Chris and Jan Cole who are passionate about the food they serve and where
it comes from. They know all their suppliers and share a common love of locally-produced quality food.
Even celebrity
chef Gary Rhodes was amazed to hear that café
cree sources all its food for the Local Food Heroes platter from within a 20-mile radius. It is one of the
reasons why café cree was
voted regional finalist in the UKTV Food Hero Awards.
Although the menu at café cree features local produce,
Chris loves to cook food from around the world and this is often reflected in the dishes he prepares.

The coffee is excellent too and was described
by one Italian visitor as the best he had had in the UK!
café cree serves freshly prepared breakfasts until noon, featuring bacon and
award-winning sausages from Newton Stewart’s local butcher. The eggs are free range and locally sourced and, in season,
duck eggs laid on the banks of the River Cree are also served.
Our hot buttered toasted teacakes
and amazing scones made by Ruthy in Dumfries are also very popular. café cree's legendary toasties and pasta dishes are just the thing for
those with hungrier appetites such as the mountain bikers enjoying the world-renowned 7Stanes trails around the nearby Galloway Forest Park. We can offer sercure cycle storage to the rear of the café. café cree also offers a separate gluten-free menu and our soups are usually gluten-free,
wheat-free, dairy-free, vegan and vegetarian.
We believe children don’t have to
be given a tomato ketchup-splattered menu of frozen and deep-fried food. Our menu includes healthy options for kids –
for example, we have sandwiches, pasta and tuna or beans on toast. We are happy to provide half-portions of full menu items,
if appropriate, but remain defeated by requests for half a toastie! We also understand vegetarian / vegan diets and offer soya milk – even keeping a dairy-free frothing
wand on our coffee machine! Please mention if you have any food intolerances and we will always try to help.
Here are some samples from our menu. (Please note, this is not our full menu.)
· Heavenly sandwich Smoked salmon, cream cheese,
lemon and black pepper sandwich (your opportunity to sample the excellent Marrbury smoked salmon, served to world leaders
at the Gleneagles G8 Summit in 2005, served on Wigwam Aphrodite bread)
· Sorbie Special Cairnsmore goat’s cheese and pesto mayonnaise sandwich served on toasted handmade Olive bread.
· Really home-made soup and Wigwam rustic bread or gluten-free
bread (soups are usually vegetarian, vegan, gluten-, wheat- and dairy-free and still amazingly tasty!). Some of our recent
soups have been roasted courgette and basil; parsnip and ginger; cauliflower and almond; and the amazing carrot, sage and
cashew…but you are just as likely to find a well-made mushroom or tomato. It is our policy to offer all
customers arriving after 12pm a wee taster of soup and handmade bread.
· Enchiladas -chilli con carne, home-made using best chunky beef served in a tortilla wrap
with soured cream and cheese, accompanied by our generous side salad. Surprisingly filling!
· Cream o’ Galloway Ice Cream – unbelievably delicious
ice cream, made just down the road.
· An extensive range of freshly
brewed Fair Trade cappuccinos, lattes, etc., from our real coffee machine and a selection of Indian, green, fruit and herbal
teas are always available.
